Pedrógão Grande is a municipality located in the district of Leiria, in central Portugal. It is about 120 km northeast of Lisbon and has a population of approximately 4,000 people.
The municipality is known for its beautiful natural landscapes, including rivers, lakes, and forests. It is also home to several historical and cultural landmarks, such as the Castle of Pedrógão and the Church of Nossa Senhora da Graça.
In June 2017, Pedrógão Grande gained international attention due to a devastating forest fire that caused over 60 fatalities and destroyed more than 24,000 hectares of land. The tragedy prompted a national Mourning Day and a fund for the families of victims and those who lost their homes.
Since then, the region has been focusing on rebuilding and promoting tourism, making sure that the memory of the tragedy is never forgotten, and efforts to prevent such incidents are taken seriously.
